EDGAR DEGAS One of the founders of the Impressionist movement, Degas, used traditional techniques, color mixing, and brushwork in his work, rather than accept the new theories and techniques of other Impressionists. Degas is best known for his images of horse racing, ballet dancers, nudes in various poses, and milliner series. The subjects of his paintings are often viewed from an unusual angle, such as above and over the shoulder of the woman trying on a hat, a bather from above at a distance, and dancers in class at a distance beyond a long expanse of dark wood flooring. The framing of his characters is similar to modern styles discovered many years later in photography and film composition.
